Orthotics is a very broad field comprising of custom made and off the shelf bracing. Most custom made braces are for polio, strokes, congenital disorders, development disorders, neuromuscular conditions, cerebral palsy, clubfoot and spina bifida. To assist with control, stabilisation, prevent injuries/damage, correct a deformity or maintain the limb in a good position. These include calipers, drop foot splints, leg braces, arm braces and spinal braces.
Most of the off the shelf bracing is used in rehabilitation and healing following an injury and is not used long term. These are for sprains, overuse injuries and fractures and wrist braces, knee braces, neck braces, hernia supports and back braces as well as moon boots are used.
